CHAPTER Sixteen
The ferry cut smoothly through the open Saratoga Passage in the early morning hours. Kai listened to her iPod as she stood at the back of the boat watching the island retreat farther and farther into the horizon. The haunting and mesmerizing sound of Florence and the Machine played in her ear, like a private soundtrack. Events of the last two weeks rolled through her mind. Her routine of helping Dani around the property and then having time to walk and think had been relaxing. Time with David the last several days had been emotional, yet time with her brother was precious to her. Then there was Dani. Not since meeting Melly all those years ago had Kai immediately connected with another person like she had with Dani. Kai was an expert at being friendly, helpful and efficient without connecting, engaging deeply or opening up to others. Dani had a way of seeing people – Kai in particular – that made Kai feel vulnerable. Kai hadn’t felt vulnerable in a very long time and wasn’t sure how she felt about it now. Many others had tried to get Kai to talk or to share – something she almost never did. Dani was different. In a few short weeks, Dani had slipped under Kai’s armor. It was as if she could see into Kai with almost no effort. Words were superfluous with Dani but even so, Kai had been compelled to share with her and was equally curious to know more about her too. Kai kept her mind from wandering too close to what this all meant. Instead she watched the island retreat and looked forward to the end of the weekend so she could return.
The ferry docked, and along with a couple hundred other islanders, Kai drove her car off the boat and traveled through the early morning commuter traffic into Seattle. When she parked her car more than an hour later in the underground parking structure beneath the Siren’s Song, she felt the familiar pull of home. Kai had called the Siren home for nearly twenty years, until three years ago when she’d saved enough to buy her own condo on Capitol Hill. She had slept within her walls, learned a trade and grown up under her roof, but most importantly, with Melly, she had learned what a real family should feel like.
Punching her security code into the keypad on the service elevator, the doors opened. Once inside, she put her key into the slot that would allow her access to Melly’s floor. Only two other people aside from Melly had a key to that floor: Gigi and the head of security. She knew that not only would the alarm alert her, but that Melly would likely be awake and reading the paper. When the doors opened into the foyer, she called out, “Melly, it’s me. You want breakfast?”
“Hey, darling! I just made coffee.” Melly called from the kitchen. Kai put her backpack down and when she turned back around, Melly caught her in a big hug, squeezing her tightly.
